A Step In the Right Direction

Welcome to Project: Best Kim!

This is my second blog that I am starting but I must admit, writing the first post is hard. I guess diving in to what Project: Best Kim is and why I’m documenting it on the internet is the best place to start!

To be frank, this project has stemmed out of my search for purpose and happiness. At 28 years old, I have to admit, I feel a little lost. My life is good, don’t get me wrong – I have a wonderful fiancee (soon to be husband!), great family and friends, a job I enjoy, and am generally happy and healthy. However, lately I’ve found myself pondering some of those “bigger questions.” Questions like, “What makes me happy?” and “What are my interests” or “Is my purpose working in higher education” or “Why do I have so much anxiety?.”

A week ago, I began listening to audiobook “The Happiness Project” by Gretchen Rubin. I had been hearing people talk about it for ages and it was on sale on Audible for $5.00 so I figured I’d give it a try. What has happened since beginning this book is a week filled with self-reflection and questioning, as I considered how happy I am and ways that I could be happier in my day-to-day life.

The truth is, I’m not always my “Best Kim.” In fact, sometimes I’m not always “Good Kim.” I complain (probably too much), spend too much time living in the past or the future, am not always intrinsically motivated, and over the past year have lost myself in wedding planning to the point that I have a difficult time pinpointing what my interests are and what I want to do – or enjoy doing! As I look to the next week, months, and years, I want to be happy. I want each day to be filled happiness and contentedness. I want to do more of what makes me happy and be mindful of things that I do or the circumstances that I am in that make me less happy.

I have a general idea of how I want to tackle this “project.” I’m hoping to set different tasks or goals in various areas of my life. I can’t quite decide if I want to have a monthly theme or just pick a few topics each month that are particularly important to me. We’ll see. But I plan to document this journey and hopefully gain a little insight into who I am, where I’m going, and what I want to be. It’s a step in the right direction, at least.

I LOVE THIS! Ironically, I bought the book not too long ago and am reading it now. I started listening to Gretchen’s podcast, “Happier.” I really enjoy it – I love the “try this at home tips” that they do right at the beginning. Have you listened to it all? I recommend!

Thanks! I just finished listening to The Happiness Project yesterday (loved it!) and started on the podcast. I’ve listened to the first two episodes. I really love it! It’s quick and filled with actual tips that I can use every day. I’m slightly obsessed!
